the carson a. berry marine science scholarship
in memory of carson a. berry
a former ccu marine biology major
Carson A. Berry, the son of Dr. James and Rebbeca L. Berry, loved learning about the ocean and aspired to create a better world by studying the sea. Berry, marine science major and German minor from Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away in December of 2018, during his senior year at CCU.
Carson suffered from Spinal Muscular Atrophy and was confined to a wheelchair. Due to his physical disabilities, he became an advocate for student accesibility during his time at CCU. Carson was named to the Dean's list, an award given to students for exellent academic standing, several times while attending Coastal Carolina.
Carson recieved his Bachelors of Science degree in Marine Science from the Coastal Carolina University Honors College poshtumously in May, 2019.
carson's contribution
In the Summer of 2018, Carson assisted with a project entitled "Increasing Interactivity in Physical Oceanography." As part of this project, Carson developed an application using MATLAB software that allows students enrolled in physical oceanography courses to visualize salinity data from boat trips in a variety of different formats without needing any programming skills. This work was presented at the March, 2019 Southeastern Estuarine Research Society Spring meeting at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Carson's honors project, which he never has the opportunity to complete due to his passing, was entitled "The Physics of Turbulence" and focused on the range of turbulance values in Winyah Bay based upon seasonal and weahter conditions.
Dr. James and Rebbeca L. Berry have created the Carson A. Berry Marine Science Scholarship to support student research and/or research related travel in the Department of Marine Science.
